VISITORS

  • September 1886 - Visitors increasing but still numbers small on account of cholera scare!

  • September 1887 - H.R.H. The Duchess of York and her son and H.R.H- Princess Louise of Wales were present at 10:45 with their suite.

  • September 1888 - Overflowing people sitting in the corridors.

  • September 1890 - Hotel so full - double services necessary

  • November 1900 - The number of visitors this autumn have been very limited. The South African War, The Paris Exhibition, The Argamennon Passion Play and the General Elections all having proved serious rivals to the popularity of this place.

  • March 1929 - Easter falls early this year, very few visitors.

  • September 1957 - Bishop of Liverpool was present.

  • March 1961 - None of the large Hotels open. No English in the place.

  • May 1968 - All the Hotel managers assure me that guests do not begin to arrive until after May 15th in these parts - fewer and fewer English. Parties now of 15, 20 or 30 to take advantage of the cheaper rates.

  • July 1987 - Hoteliers and Concierges report very few English tourists and many cancellations (Valtellina disaster)

  • June 1989 - In congregation Andrew Wylie, Scottish Kirk Chaplain to North Sea oil Rigs (and ex Chairman of the Board, Aiglon College, Switzerland)

  • May 1990 - Not many visitors in hotels yet.
