THE CHURCH

  • Designed by Giuseppe Brentano (1862-1889), a young Milanese architect who won the competition to redesign the front of the Duomo of Milan, he did not live to see the realization of the Church of the Ascension.

  • Built at a cost of 55.000 Francs (Euros 187.000) it was subscribed to by some 350 individuals.(see attached listing)

  • It is probable that the “original” Church building was a “shell” made up of the nave, sanctuary, vestry, the organ and the bell tower.

  • Additions to the Church were made over the following years as noted by the Dedication Ceremonies and Fund Raising activities.

  • May 15th 1890 - Foundation Stone of new church laid by Robert M.Carrick.

  • May 7th 1891 - Dedication of the Church of the Ascension

  • September 29th 1891 Consecration of the Church of the Ascension by the Bishop of Gibraltar

  • 10th to 17th July 1892 - Church in painter’s hands

  • 16th July 1893 - Workmen repairing west window.

  • 31st March 1895 - structure and alterations in the Sanctuary

  • 21st April 1895 - Dedication of new Altar by Archbishop of York

  • 11th June 1895 - Baldacchino erected (with Genoa and Verona marble)

  • 9th August 1896 - New Pulpit completed

  • 29th September 1896 - Offertory for the completion of the Church porch.

  • 19th June 1902 - Marble pavement in the Sanctuary was laid

  • 12th October 1902 - Dedication of window “Resurrection”

  • 12th October 1902 - Electric light first used in the Church at Evensong

  • 6th March 1904 - No lights, unable to see

  • 3rd February 1907 - No fires at 8:30 - Church full of smoke and bitterly cold at 11:00

  • 6th December 1908 - Violet Altar frontal was dedicated

  • 6th May 1917 - Blessing of new Mosaics (by Roderick Faleon Murchinson)

  • 12th July 1925 - Columns in the nave are being covered in marble

  • 19th May 1929 - Chancel steps dedicated

  • 1st June 1947 - Windows (on lake side) made secure thanks to reader of the Church Times and former worshipper.

  • 15th June 1947- Pace Baron Jones etc. locally think the church is improved by the plain glass (windows).

  • 20th June 1976 - Dedication of Rose Window

  • 2nd August 1987 - workmen repaired roof in one day.

  • 13th September 1987 - new lighting system a great help, particularly the outside lights

  • 1st September 1988 - heavy storm, rain penetrated church vestry

  • 11th June 1989 - water from Villa Norella overflowing down wall at back of the Church.

  • 19th May 1991 - Vestry and outside offices have been redecorated

  • 18th August 1991 - Electrical power failed

  • 25th August 1991 - redecoration of Portico roof

  • 22nd September 1991 - rain penetrated lakeside windows and “west” corner

  • 2nd July 1995 - The gateway to the Church was restored

  • 20th August 1995 - rain through Vestry ceiling
